Pakistan team coach happy with IPL snub

Pakistan cricket team coach Waqar Younis is pleased with the non-inclusion of Pakistani cricketers in the profitable IPL this year.Waqar believed that while on the one end it is a huge financial loss for the players but on the other it is in the best interest of the country that players are not playing in IPL which would keep them fresh and help them to maintain their focus on national duties. Pakistani players were restricted to take part in the last three season of IPL due to tension between the governments of both countries after Mumbai attacks and Waqar took it as blessing in disguise for Pakistan cricket.
Waqar admitted that the last six to eight months were very tough for Pakistan cricket but his boys have worked hard to earn the recent victories. “Our team has new set up and the boys are eager to win matches. We have tried different combinations and now developing into a good unit. We are hoping for more victories in international cricket this year and I am proud of my boys,” said Younis.

IPL 2 ripe with forex rule violations: RBI

The Reserve Bank of India  has found that the 2nd season of the  IPL hosted in South Africa was mired with violations of overseas exchange laws.
According to news, the federal bank has found some serious violations by the Board of Control for BCCI during the Twenty20 cricket tournament held in 2009.
The RBI is said to have filed a report to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance in which it accused the Indian cricket board of not adhering to its foreign exchange protocols.
The Bank is apparently waiting for a report by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) before coming up with a suitable penalty for the BCCI.
At least four national banks Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, Yes Bank and State Bank of Travancore are also expected to be served showcause notices for allegedly being a party to move money to India from accounts in South Africa.

PlayStation Phone Found, That Time on a Video !

We’ve obtained a lot of on the job and also escapes from the Ps3 Phone referred to as Zeus Z1 and also now a relevant video have been noticed displaying a lucky person enjoying Resident Evil 2 and also Rage Racer on the PlayStation. The hardware is actually evidently around the upward or more, even though proven fact that the game titles needed to be packed via ROM Buddy (a third-party Android application with regard to operating ROMs) points too the software is still being tinkered with.
Or even until this is just about all a dreadful hoax. That said, it appears to be this thing is really a done deal. Discover for yourself following the break.

WikiLeaks losing half a million euros a week: Assange

Whistleblower website WikiLeaks has been losing some half a million euros a week since it began publishing confidential US cables, the founder of the site Julian Assange said in an interview appearing on Monday.
When asked about the pressure put on him over the website’s move, Assange told Swiss newspapers Tribune de Geneve and 24 Heures: “From a personal point of view, no. I would say that the pressure reinforces my determination.
“But from a financial point of view, it’s another matter.
“We have been losing more than 600,000 francs (481,068 euros, USD 620,053) a week since the start of the publication of the diplomatic cables. To continue our business, we would need to find a way or other to get this money back,” he added.
There was no explanation of why Wikileaks was losing money with the publication, but several banks or payment systems have terminated business with the website in recent weeks.
The Australian is on bail in Britain facing extradition proceedings to Sweden on charges of sexual assault. The date of his trial is to be fixed during a hearing on Tuesday in London.
Media reports suggest that US prosecutors are also trying to build a case against him on the grounds that he encouraged a US soldier, Bradley Manning, to steal cables from a government computer and pass them to WikiLeaks.
Assange had also acknowledged during a December interview to Britain’s Sunday Times that financial difficulties had pushed him to sign more than one million pounds (1.2 million euros, USD 1.55 million) in deals for his autobiography.
He denied having already received this sum. “Contrary to what has been said, I have not received 1.1 million pounds to write my autobiography. I would get 1.1 million pounds in a couple of years’ time if my book became a success,” he told the Swiss newspapers.

Farmer killed by Israeli fire in Gaza

A 65-year-old Palestinian farmer was on Monday shot dead by Israeli troops in the northern Gaza Strip, Palestinian medical and security officials said.
Adham Abu Selmiya, spokesman for the Hamas-run medical services, named the farmer as Shaaban al-Qarmoot, and said his body was being transferred to the nearby Kamal Adwan hospital.
The shooting occurred near the town of Beit Hanun, which lies very close to the Erez border crossing with Israel.

US instructions Twitter to hand over WikiLeaks accounts

A US court has ordered Twitter to hand over information of the accounts of WikiLeaks and numerous supporters as part of a criminal investigation into the release of hundreds of thousands of secret documents.
The December 14 subpoena obtained by the Department of Justice and published by online magazine Salon.com on Friday said the records sought from the microblogging website were “relevant to an ongoing criminal investigation.”
It ordered Twitter to provide account information on WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and Bradley Manning, the US Army intelligence analyst suspected of leaking Pentagon documents made public last year by WikiLeaks.
The information sought by the government includes all connection records and session times, IP addresses used to access Twitter, email and residential addresses plus billing records and details of bank accounts and credit cards.
The subpoena included the accounts of WikiLeaks supporters Jacob Appelbaum, Rop Gonggrijp and Birgitta Jonsdottir, a former WikiLeaks volunteer and member of Iceland’s parliament.
“WikiLeaks strongly condemns this harassment of individuals by the US government,” Assange’s lawyer, Mark Stephens, said in a statement issued in London.
The government is examining whether criminal charges can be brought against Assange for helping to make public hundreds of thousands of confidential US diplomatic cables that embarrassed Washington and several of its allies.
Stephens said three of the four individuals targeted by the Department of Justice had never worked for WikiLeaks and were private citizens who supported WikiLeaks voluntarily as activists or politicians.
Two of them were instrumental in helping WikiLeaks make public the Pentagon video that showed a US helicopter crew firing on Iraqi civilians, Stephens said. WikiLeaks is instructing its lawyers to oppose the subpoena, he added.
Jonsdottir said she was seeking legal advice and had spoken to Iceland’s minister of justice, who is looking into the case.
“I have nothing to hide and have done nothing wrong — I have no intention to hand my information over willingly to DoJ (Department of Justice),” Jonsdottir wrote on Twitter.
The subpoena gave Twitter Inc three days to provide the records and ordered the San Francisco-based company not to inform the users under investigation.
A federal judge unsealed the order on January 5 after Twitter requested the right to inform the people involved.
Stephens said this legal action by Twitter had made public the existence of a criminal investigation of WikiLeaks.
The lawyer called on Facebook and Google to unseal any similar subpoenas requesting information about WikiLeaks.
Washington has accused WikiLeaks of acting without regard for the safety of those named in the cables, which contained candid remarks and assessments of foreign leaders and governments.
The State Department said on Friday it has warned several hundred people worldwide it believes may be imperiled by the release and has helped a handful of them relocate to safer places.

Federal govt to complete its time: Nawaz Sharif

PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif has said his party does not seek mid-term elections and wants the elected government to complete its full phrase. He was addressing a press meeting at his Raiwind home after a meeting of senior party leaders on Monday.
Referring to the use of the word ‘ultimatum’ during presentation of his 10-point agenda last week, Nawaz clarified that he never used it. He said his party would extend assistance to the federal government for the implementation of its plan after it withdrew raise in oil rates. He said the party would submit its 10-point agenda to the PPP government in a couple of days. A four-member committee, headed by Senator Ishaq Dar with Sardar Mehtab Abbasi, Pervaiz Rashid and Abdul Qadir Baloch as its member, has been constituted for consultations with the government on the agenda, he added. He said his party had acted as a responsible opposition by reaching out to the federal government for resolving crises.
“The government should reduce officials having negative image and replace them with honest and upright people. The federal government should take back loans availed on political grounds and got waived off subsequently. It should evolve a procedure to fix the costs of daily use products. All courts’ decisions, including the one on NRO, should be implemented. Election Commission should be reconstituted. A 30 percent cut in government expenditure should be imposed besides reducing the size of federal cabinet.
He said PM Yousaf Raza Gilani has become a more powerful PM after the 18th Amendment to the constitution. The PML-N chief rejected to talk about the matter of appointment of Punjab governor. Nawaz demanded probe into the killing of Benazir Bhutto and Akbar Bugti.

Aishwarya avoids embarrassed moment with Salman

At the in recent times held 17th Annual Star Screen Awards, Aishwarya Rai avoided a potentially embarrassed moment with Salman Khan, with dignity and several quick thoughts.
A source present at the event said, “The closing act of the awards was performed by Aishwarya on many of her popular hits.  As she reached the backstage much ahead of time for her performance, she decided to rest at the nearby lounge till her performance was announced.
But before Ash could enter the lounge she bumped into Vidya Balan and the two exchanged pleasantries for some time.
After her conversation Ash went inside, glanced around and was seen walking out of the room swiftly. Ash stood quietly outside and refused to budge till her performance was announced.”
When the organisers of the show, Cineyug, and the people around were wondering about the reason for Ash’s sudden exit, Salman Khan was suddenly spotted casually strolling out of the lounge.
“It was obvious that Salman was inside (the lounge) but Ash with her usual poise, assessed a potentially embarrassing situation and left quickly thus averting it completely.
After Salman left, a crew member rushed to Aishwarya and told her that she could now probably go and relax at the lounge but Ash refused and stayed outside,” the source said.
The source also informed that while Aishwarya rushed out from the lounge, Salman appeared to be perfectly calm and collected even after spotting his ex-girlfriend.

Shilpa almost missed her anniversary party

Shilpa Shetty’s New Year party didn’t go as expected. The actress has already been upset by comments by Anil Kapoor about her ‘lip job’, the actress was more angry when she turned late at a party thrown in her honour.
According to the reports, Shilpa’s hubby Raj Kundra`s good friend Raj Shetty threw a mega-bash in Dubai for his friend and `bhabhi` and termed it a dual celebration.
Dual, because, obviously 2010 had come to an end, it was the beginning of a New Year, and Raj and Shilpa had completed a year of matrimony. The party was terrific, but Shilpa was stuck in some mega traffic whilst on her way to the big bash.
By the time she reached, fireworks were on in full force. And though all was hunky-dory that night, Shilpa wasn`t in a mood to forgive.
But, more so, the actress is most upset with Anil Kapoor`s comments and Shetty is not in a mood to just shut up! She intends to give it right back on another chat show

Is SRK the top paid host on TV?

The TV show ‘Zor Ka Jhatka’ which was first ffered to Saif Ali Khan, will now be hosted by SRK as Saif has denied for it Shahrukh Khan. Sources say that Shahrukh Khan is actually charging Rs.2.5 crore per episode of the show.
Leading industry sources say that with this huge amount, SRK surely becomes the top paid tinsel town hero to host a TV show. Bollywood greats like Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan himself have hosted many shows, and the amount that they get for each episode was a matter of great debate and speculation, until now. However, the figures now favour Shah Rukh Khan’s side.
A source from the show reveals, “No one will speak openly about how much he is earning, but SRK charging Rs.2.5 crore certainly seems a believable figures. As of now what can we reveal is that Shahrukh Khan is for four weeks, Monday to Thursday, and if calculate it, he is getting Rs.40 crore for 16 episodes. Bring on the superstar who can charge so much even after his last stint on TV (Kya Hum Paanchvi Pass Se Tez Hain) was panned and did not get the TRP that he got during Kaun Banega Crorepati.”
Looks like Shahrukh Khan is climbing newer peaks. Anyways, we are waiting for the show to come on air.

Angry Salman Khan slapped a fan outside Anil Kapoor’s house

Bollywood actor  Salman Khan has done it again, Salman Khan slapped a fan outside Anil Kapoor’s house, who apparently kissed and hugged him. The hunk of an actor even had the slapgate footage deleted, The story quoted an eyewitness as saying, “The incident happened moments after Salman arrived at Anil Kapoor’s birthday bash. Just a few moments before this, Anil had escorted Salman’s father, Salim Khan, into the party.
Salman was alighting from his car when all of a sudden a man, who appeared to be in his mid-20s and called himself Ajay, rushed towards him, hugged him and then kissed him.” “It seems Salman was in very high spirits. Without batting an eyelid, Salman slapped Ajay,” said the eyewitness. Apparently, Ajay, who was least prepared for Salman’s wrath, was in an utter state of shock.Meanwhile, an entertainment channel managed to take the footage of Salman’s misbehaviour. When Salman saw this, he got offended.
At once, Salman’s security personnel came up and ordered the footage to be deleted. “Woh dadagiri karne lage. ‘Chal delete kar, chal jaldi delete kar,’ they said,” added the eyewitness. When attempts were made to salvage the footage, Salman stepped in to request the erasure of the footage. At this moment, Anil came rushing out. “Anil and Salim were wondering why Salman was taking so long to come, as they had already spotted Sallu’s car being parked outside the bungalow. Sensing the commotion, Anil went up to Salman Khan; he made a similar request regarding the footage,” said the witness.
Meanwhile, shielding Salman, another witness said, “The guy who hugged and kissed Salman was very aggressive.  You can’t get so close to them and make them this uncomfortable. Anybody else in Salman’s position would have done the same thing.” Seconds after the recording was deleted, the stars went into the house.

Aishwarya Rai to go to court against Elle magazine

Actress Aishwarya Rai is in a stinking mood and it’s all owing to her latest Elle magazine photo-shoot that spurred pretty a racial row. Aishwarya Rai who appears to be a few tones fairer than her original skin tone, is peeved with the publication for making her look some shades lighter. Aishwarya Rai who is always politically correct and rarely indulges in any show of emotion, has been fuming ever since the cover hit stands.
Confirming the news, a source close to her told a daily, “Aishwarya’s first reaction was disbelief. She believed that these things don’t happen anymore. Not in this day and age when women are recognized for their merit, and not for the colour of their skin. She is currently verifying this skin-whitening allegation. If there is any proof of this, she might even take action.”  As per reports, the doctored image was brought to Ash’s attention by her fans, who flew into a rage after they saw that their icon was made to look ghastly white on the cover.
However, this isn’t the first time that the magazine has preached Caucasian standards of beauty. It might be recalled that in September this year, the US edition of the same magazine had featured on its cover an African-American actress, Gabourey Sidibe, with a much paler complexion.

Magazine retouches Aishwarya Rai’s image

Has Aishwarya Rai’s image been retouched by a fashion magazine? The news in the web world seems to suggest so. Aishwarya Rai, who has often been called ” the most beautiful female in the world”, is allegedly raising eyebrows because of her appearance on the cover of a fashion magazine’s December issue.
Web portals advise that even though Aishwarya Rai is pretty fair- skinned, she looks extremely light on her latest cover. At the same time, it’s also suggested that the disparity in skin tone might also be the work of some bright studio lighting.

I was blind in one eye: Mila Kunis

She might have wowed viewers with her balley moves in `Black Swan`, but actress Mila Kunis has exposed she was blind in one eye for years. The 27-year-old actress said she struggled with chronic iritis, an inflammation of the iris.
As a result of her condition she suffered blurred vision, developed a cataract and her eyes became different colours, reported Cosmopolitan magazine.”I was blind in one eye for many years, and nobody knew,” said Kunis. But surgery has corrected the problem and the actress` vision is normal now.”I was blind. I`m not blind anymore. I had surgery a couple of months ago. They cut it open and dropped a new lens in there.”
Kunis may have opened up about being blind but one topic she doesn`t want to discuss is her relationship with Macaulay Culkin. The couple dated for eight years before quietly splitting a few months ago and Kunis refuses to comment on it.”Never have, never will. The reason I`m able to have a relationship is because I don`t talk about it,” she said.
She does openly talk about what she looks for in a man, though.”Confidence, not cockiness. Knowing who you are is confidence. Cockiness is knowing who you are and pushing it down everyone`s throat.”

Old foes Harbhajan and Symonds in same team

It’s going to be the main eye-catcher of IPL-4 when not-so-best friends Andrew Symmonds and Harbhajan Singh walk arm-in-arm in Mumbai Indians’ colours.
They are known to be the mischief mongers of cricketing world and no one can forget their ‘monkeygate’ controversy. And on Saturday, last year’s IPL runners-up bought Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds for $ 850,000 to share the dressing room with Harbhajan Singh.
Symonds and Harbhajan have been involved in on-field spats and controversies and just love to hate each other after the Australian accused the Indian off-spinner of racial abuse by calling him ‘monkey’ in the controversial Sydney Test in 2007-08.
Harbhajan, who often gets himself into trouble on and off the field, was also in the middle of the ‘slapgate’ incident when he allegedly slapped Indian teammate S Sreesanth when Mumbai Indians lost to Kings XI Punjab in IPL-1.
On the other hand, Symonds is no different from his old foe and future teammate, getting in trouble due to his careless attitude off the field, for which he has been reprimanded by Cricket Australia on a number of occasions.
Mumbai Indians’ skipper Sachin Tendulkar surely has some extra work on his table now as he will need to keep two mischief mongers in check in his team.
It will be one of the best sights in IPL-4 when the duo congratulates each other after a wicket or victory. Cameras will surely focus on these two when they take field every time they play for Mumbai Indians.
For sure Harbhajan and Symonds will make IPL more entertaining with their love-hate relationship.

Soccer Player fakes kidnapping to skip training

Botafogo midfielder Somalia faked  a story about his own kidnapping Friday morning to avoid a fine for being not on time to practice.
Rather than risk losing 40% of his paycheck for being late, Somalia told police that he was kidnapped at 7:15 a.m.
Security footage from Somalia’s building showed him going into his apartment at 4:00 a.m. and leaving around 9:00 a.m.

English team outplay Australia in all departments

Meticulous preparation, thorough professionalism and unprecedented fitness levels underpinned English team’s 3-1 Ashes success in Australia.
They possessed the best batsman in Alastair Cook, the most successful bowler in James Anderson and a management team of head coach Andy Flower and captain Andrew Strauss who scarcely put a foot wrong.
England outplayed a team who have dominated world cricket for the past 15 years in all departments of the game.
Strauss joins Len Hutton as the only English captains to win an Ashes series home and away against a full-strength Australian side in a five-match series.
Five months ago Cook was playing for his Test place. Now the former choirboy with the streak of steel and insatiable hunger for runs occupies a place in the record books alongside the giants of the game.
He scored 235 not out in Brisbane to save a match Australia had dominated, 148 in Adelaide to set up an England victory, and 189 in Sydney to extinguish the home side’s last faint hopes of levelling the series.
Cook batted more than 36 hours, longer than anybody in a five-match series, and his Ashes series aggregate of 766 is second only to the great Wally Hammond’s 905 in 1928-29.

Trio can play World Cup if found not guilty: ICC

The ICC has clarified that the suspended Pakistani cricketers could be the part of Pakistan World Cup team if they were confirmed not guilty by the independent tribunal.
The ICC has made it clear that the suspended trio will play world cup if they will declare innocent by the Beloff-led tribunal. The news is very positive for the Pakistan team as they are seriously missing the services of Amir and Asif in their vulnerable bowling department and inclusion of either Amir or Asif will certainly lift the morale of the team and also boost the team’s chances of winning in the mega event.
The ICC had suspended three Pakistani players Salman Butt, M Asif and M Amir on their alleged involvement in spot-fixing scandal revealed by the British tabloid newspaper News of the World in August last year during the fourth Test match between Pakistan and England at Lords.
The ICC formed three-member tribunal to decide the fate of the players. The tribunal has started its hearing in Doha from Thursday (Jan 6) and will continue till January 11.
In the meantime, the deadline of announcing the preliminary squad for the participating teams is finished.
Meanwhile A make-or-break anti-corruption tribunal against Pakistan cricketers Salman Butt, M Asif and M Aami opened in Doha Thursday with the players facing lengthy bans if found guilty.
“It has just started. All three players are here,” an International Cricket Council official said from the closed door hearing at the Qatar Financial Centre.
It is scheduled to run until January 11, although lawyers have indicated a verdict may come earlier.
The three face charges of spot-fixing during Pakistan’s tour of England last year in a scandal that rocked the sport. It is alleged that they conspired in the bowling of deliberate no-balls — claims they all deny.

Analysts predict top prices for Verizon iPhone

Analysts say Verizon may sell its long-anticipated iPhone at a higher price than customers are used to paying for Apple’s iconic smartphone, but split on how much more one could cost.
Verizon is expected to announce Tuesday morning that it will soon start selling an iPhone that runs on its network.
On Monday, analysts couldn’t agree on whether the announcement will be accompanied by a price hike.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if the iPhone [on Verizon] doesn’t cost $50 more,” said Brian Marshall, an analyst with Gleacher & Co., referring to the $199 entry-level price that U.S. customers now pay for a subsidized iPhone 4.But Francis Sideco, a principal analyst in the wireless group at iSuppli, an El Segundo, Calif.-based research firm that specializes in calculating hardware “bill of materials” (BOM) costs, disagreed with Marshall.
“I don’t perceive any material differences in BOM, IP [intellectual property] costs, or the retail price of an iPhone on Verizon if it’s a CDMA-only device,” said Sideco, taking the side of the $199 argument.
Unlike other analysts, Marshall said that the iPhone for Verizon will support only CDMA (code division multiples access) — the wireless standard across the carrier’s network — rather than function in both CDMA and the faster next-generation LTE (long term evolution) network that Verizon launched in 38 markets last month.
He attributed the higher price of a CDMA-only iPhone to a bigger patent licensing bill. “There’s more patent expense with a CDMA iPhone,” said Marshall, “particularly with all the Qualcomm patents.”
Technology from San Diego, Calif.-based Qualcomm is the foundation of the CDMA standards that Verizon supports on its network.
Marshall said the customer price of a CDMA-only iPhone could be as high as $250. Additional patent licensing fees will raise Apple’s costs by a “low single digit” amount, he claimed, but the end user hike would be higher.
Sideco dismissed the idea of a price increase, saying that Apple’s already paying patent fees to Qualcomm. “There’s no way that with the volume that the iPhone has put up, that Qualcomm would not have asserted their IP rights, even though we haven’t heard of that publicly,” said Sideco.
The current iPhone operates on W-CDMA (wideband code division multiples access) networks, which are typically marketed as UMTS (universal mobile telecommunications system). AT&T’s 3G network, for instance, relies on W-CDMA/UMTS.
Qualcomm also has a large patent W-CDMA portfolio, Sideco noted.
Sideco would not bet on either option — CDMA-only or dual mode — because credible arguments could be made for both. His take: a 50-50 chance for each.
“A CDMA-only iPhone would go against Apple’s mantra to be the premier producer of smartphones,” Sideco point out. “LTE is the thing that people are talking about this year.”

Verizon Will Give iPhone customers Unlimited Data Plans

Verizon plans on offering iPhone customers unlimited data plans when it starts selling the handset in a several weeks.
AT&T only offers capped data plans for its users, though its monthly prices are lower than Verizon.
At Verizon, iPhone owners will be able to pay $30 per month for unlimited data. AT&T’s most generous plan is $25 per month for 2 gig of data.
While 2 gigs is plenty, Verizon could use the “unlimited” data as a marketing pitch to steal customers.
Though, obviously, the number one selling point will be that iPhone owners can finally make phones calls without worrying about dropped calls.

Major four cyber threats for 2011 exposed

From Internet superweapons to Facebook crimes, safety experts have predicted some latest web attacks for 2011. Here are the top four safety concerns that cyber experts see coming over the digital horizon:
Cyber War’s newest superweapon: Stuxnet and Copycats Stuxnet was first discovered in July 2010 by a security firm in Belarus, but made headlines only when Iranian state media announced the Middle East nation had been the target of a coordinated attack.
“The idea that a piece of malicious code can target physical systems and create real-world impacts is something that’s been speculated in the industry for quite some time and certainly was largely understood to be possible,” ABC News quoted Ben Greenbaum, senior research manager for cyber security firm Symantec, as saying.
When Hacktivists attack Another recent online development that experts expect to see increase in 2011 was played out on an international scale at the end of 2010.
Shortly after the information sharing website WikiLeaks published a portion of over 250,000 classified US diplomatic documents, the website’s founder, Julian Assange, was arrested on sexual assault charges. While he was in custody in England, some major financial institutions including Mastercard, Paypal and Visa discontinued a service that was helping to raise money for Assange’s defense.
Wikileaks” supporters shot back in an unprecedented manner: nearly 50,000 people downloaded simple programs used to launch a massive denial of service attacks against the companies they deemed at odds with Wikileaks.
The loosely organized “hacktivists” managed to take down the web pages of several of their targets, and their spontaneous attempt may be the first major showing of a new way to express political beliefs at a grassroots level.
Cyber security firm McAfee predicts in a new paper that not only will politically motivated attacks be “far more numerous in 2011,” but also the company said brand new kinds of attacks would appear.
Mobile devices: Two ways for criminals to take advantage On a more personal level, experts warned that as more and more people own internet-capable mobile devices in 2011, they’re also increasing their exposure to cyber and real-life criminals.
First, McAfee showed that the GPS functions on many smart phones that allow users to tell their friends where they are via Facebook and Twitter also tell criminals exactly where they are-and where they are not.
“It then becomes child’s play to craft a targeted attack based upon what the bad guys have just learned from these services,” McAfee said.
While this is not a new phenomenon, McAfee reported mobile tracking will be a “huge focus for cybercriminals and scammers in 2011 and beyond.”
Second, both Security News Daily and Symantec list the technical vulnerabilities of mobile devices on their list of dangers for 2011.
Spammers Adapt to Social Media Finally, experts said 2011 is going to see a change in perhaps the most annoying security concern online: spammers.
A curious thing happened in Dec. 2010: Normally the amount of email spam would be at its highest levels during the holiday season, but instead it dropped dramatically, according to a study by web security provider Commtouch. Part of the reason, McAfee said, is that spammers are altering their strategy.
Rather than bombarding users with countless emails, they bombard users through social networking sites-with multiple links and requests from programs like Facebook and Twitter-attempting to trick users including clicking on links to malicious code.
“This shift will completely alter the threat landscape in 2011,” said McAfee.

Apple will sell at least 10 million iPhones in 2011

Verizon is expected to declare the Verizon iPhone next week.So how numerous are people going to buy? As we said last month. At least 10 million iPhones in the first year, we estimate, generating $6 billion or more of incremental revenue for Apple.
That’s big growth — more than we think many people are expecting — and well worth the cost of making a second version of the iPhone that works on Verizon’s network. And it will probably reduce Google’s Android market share in the U.S., a win-win for Apple.
How did we figure that?
AT&T activated about 14 million new iPhones over the past four quarters on a subscriber base that’s now a little more than 90 million. (Of those activations, about 10 million were by existing AT&T subscribers.)
Verizon’s subscriber base is also about 90 million, and we don’t expect iPhone adoption to be wildly different on Verizon than it has been on AT&T. Maybe somewhat less, because Verizon folks already have high-end Android phones, but not much less.
Plus, Verizon could easily convince a bunch of AT&T iPhone subscribers to jump over. For perspective, if Apple were to have sold 10 million incremental iPhones over the past four quarters, that would have represented around 25% growth over its roughly 40 million shipments during that time.

Stay health in youth for less cholesterol in middle age

A latest study has suggested that adopting healthy habits in youth is linked with more favourable cholesterol levels in middle age.

Costan G Magnussen, of University of Tasmania, Hobart, Australia, and University of Turku, Finland, and colleagues studied 539 young adults.

Participants had their cholesterol and triglyceride levels measured in 1985 when they were age 9, 12 or 15, and again at a follow-up between 2004 and 2006 (an average of 20 years later). High-risk levels were defined as a total cholesterol level of 240 milligrams per deciliter or higher, an LDL or “bad” cholesterol level of 160 milligrams per deciliter or higher, an HDL or “good” cholesterol level of less than 40 milligrams per deciliter or a triglyceride level of 200 milligrams per deciliter or higher.

In addition, their height, weight, waist circumference, skin-fold thickness, smoking behaviors, cardiorespiratory fitness and socioeconomic factors were recorded at both time points.

“Using established cut points, we found that substantial proportions of individuals with high-risk blood lipid and lipoprotein levels at baseline no longer had high-risk levels at follow-up,” the authors write.

Those who did remain high-risk gained more body fat and were more likely to begin or continue smoking during the follow-up period.

Participants who had low-risk profiles in youth but became high-risk as adults also had greater increases in body fat, were less likely to improve their socioeconomic conditions and became less fit between measurements than did those who remained low-risk.

When looking only at high-density lipoprotein levels (HDL, or “good” cholesterol), the authors found that participants who did not improve any lifestyle factors between youth and adulthood had more than double the prevalence of low HDL levels than the study average (26.2 percent vs. 11.9 percent). Conversely, those who had improved at least two lifestyle factors had a prevalence of low HDL less than one-fourth that of the study average.

“Our findings are important for two reasons. First, they suggest that beneficial changes in modifiable risk factors (smoking and adiposity) in the time between youth and adulthood have the potential to shift those with high-risk blood lipid and lipoprotein levels in youth to low-risk levels in adulthood. Second, they emphasize that preventive programs aimed at those who do not have high-risk blood lipid and lipoprotein levels in youth are equally important if the proportion of adults with high-risk levels is to be reduced.”

The study appears in the January issue of Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

Do tomatoes help stop vascular diseases?

The study, published in the journal Molecular Nutrition & Food Research, reveals that an extracted compound, 9-oxo-octadecadienoic, has anti-dyslipidemic affects.

The team led by Dr Teruo Kawada, from Kyoto University and supported by the Research and Development Program for New Bio-industry Initiatives, Japan, focused their research on extracts which tackle dyslipidemia, a condition which is caused by an abnormal amount of lipids, such as cholesterol or fat, in the blood stream.

“Dyslipidemia itself usually causes no symptoms,” said Kawada, “however; it can lead to symptomatic vascular diseases, such as arteriosclerosis and cirrhosis. In order to prevent these diseases it is important to prevent an increased build up of lipids.”

Tomato is already known to contain many compounds beneficial to health. In this study the team analyzed 9-oxo-octadecadienoic acid, to test its potential anti-dyslipidemia properties.

The compound was found to enhance fatty acid oxidation and contributed to the regulation of hepatic lipid metabolism. These findings suggest that 9-oxo-octadecadienoic acid has anti- dyslipidemia affects and can therefore help prevent vascular diseases.

“Finding a compound which helps the prevention of obesity-related chronic diseases in foodstuffs is a great advantage to tackling these diseases”, concluded Kawada. “It means that the tomato allows people to easily manage the onset of dyslipidemia through their daily diet.”

UK short of flu vaccine as death toll mounts

The number of Britons killed by swine flu in the northern winter has reached 50 after a 32-year-old female became the most recent victim.

Sarah Applin had given birth to a son just two weeks ago.

When announcing her death, Ms Applin’s parents urged pregnant women and others considered at risk to have the flu vaccination.

Britain’s Health Protection Agency (HPA) says 11 people have died of swine flu in the past week and confirmed the flu has already claimed 47 lives, with three others dying from another strain known as type B.

Most of the deaths were children and young adults, with five deaths among under-fives and eight among those aged between five and 14.

British prime minister David Cameron has admitted parts of the country are now running low on vaccine stocks.

Britain has no central stockpile and vaccines are ordered every year by doctors’ surgeries.

According to the UK Vaccine Industry Group, 14.7 million doses of flu vaccine have been delivered across Britain, which has a population of around 62 million.

Authorities say more than 700 infected people are in intensive care and high-dependency hospital beds.

Hospitals are being told to cancel routine operations to make way for the most seriously ill flu patients.

Four solar and two lunar eclipses in 2011

Four solar and two total moon eclipses will be observed in different parts of the world. The first solar eclipse will take place Jan 4. It will begin at 06:40 GMT and will be visible from Europe, the Middle East and Northern Africa.

At maximum eclipse in northern Europe, the moon will cover 86 percent of the Sun’s diameter.

The next solar eclipse will occur June 1. People on the Russian Kolguyev island in the Barents Sea will have a chance to observe the Moon covering 60 percent of the Sun’s diameter.

The eclipse will also be visible from the eastern Arctic, northern Canada, the Kamchatka peninsula and other regions of Russia’s Far East.

On June 15, a total moon eclipse will take place, which will be visible from India, the Middle East, Africa and southern Europe.

Soon after it, another solar eclipse will occur, but this time the moon will cast its shadow on less then 0.1 percent of the sun.

On Nov 25, the moon will cover a total of 90.4 percent of the sun’s diameter, but the eclipse will be visible only from Antarctica and its surrounding seas.

People of the entire Eurasia region, as well as of Australia and the northwestern part of North America will have a chance to observe the second and the last total moon eclipse Dec 10 this year.

Police investigate hacker attack on Brazil president’s site

Federal police are investigating an apparent hacker attack on the website of Brazil’s president, just a day after President Dilma Rousseff took office, officials told media Tuesday.

The attack on Sunday was being investigated by the Federal Data Processing Service, according to official sources cited by G1 reports and Agencia Folha.

“The federal police will probe anybody responsible for attempts to block the security of the president’s office,” Serpro’s spokesperson Carlos Marcos Torres told G1.

A group calling itself the “Fatal Error Crew” took credit for the apparent attack in a Twitter posting.

Serpro said there was an intentional flood of attempts to access presidencia.gov and brasil.gov, which knocked the sites out of service for a few hours.

In April, the ruling Workers Party had its website knocked out by a hacker for 24 hours.

Glasses-Free 3D Fails To Wow At CES 2011

If glasses-free 3D is really the future of TV, you wouldn’t know by the handful of companies that are showing off the technology at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

LG put their glasses-free TV right out on the demo floor. Unfortunately, the company also had to put a white line in the carpet to show onlookers where to stand. And even then you must stand dead-center to get a semi-decent 3D effect. Standing off to the side even by just a few inches reveals the limitations of glasses-free tech.

Over at the Toshiba booth, they made glasses-free 3D the centerpiece — literally — of their large booth. Convention-goers formed long, snaking lines to enter the black box housing several of the glasses-free sets.

And even though the set-up of the booth succeeded in drawing interested parties, what awaited inside was a letdown. While the Toshiba TV is viewable from a few more angles than the LG set, it still wouldn’t work for more than three people sitting very close together on the couch.

On a more positive note, one of my colleagues at Consumer Reports got her hands on the Nintendo 3DS portable gaming system. “The graphics were clear, and the 3D effects added a new dimension—pun intended—to the gameplay,” she wrote.

Companies like Samsung, RCA, JVC and Panasonic decided against bringing glasses-free technology. Sharp only demonstrated it on two prototypes for portable devices (one tablet-sized and one with a 3.8″ screen).

Speaking to Consumerist, reps for the companies that refrained from showing off glasses-free 3D voiced the opinion that the technology will someday be standard, but that it hasn’t been developed enough to sell to the retail market.
